  DEACON FORMATION PROGRAM
  The Diocese of Gallup “Deacon Formation Program” is beginning the recruitment process for the next co-
  hort. There will be a “Come and See” weekend February 17-19, 2023 at Sacred Heart Retreat Center
  near Gallup. Visitors will join our current candidates in prayer, discernment, Mass and classes. A special
  information session will be presented for the prospective candidates and their wives. “Come and See” visi-
  tors are guests of the Diocese and there will be no fee. If you are interested, please call Deacon Jim Betts

  The Bishop’s Mardi Gras 2023
  The Bishop’s Mardi Gras is an annual dinner and auction to benefit the
  Catholic People’s Foundation. It is typically held on the Saturday before Ash Wednesday in
  Gallup, NM, with full NOLA style and flair! Beads, doubloons, masks, live music, food, drink,
  dancing, and live and silent auctions make this an event you won’t want to miss.
  This year’s Bishop’s Mardi Gras will be held Saturday, February 18, 2023 at Red Rock State Park.
  Gathering: 5:00pm • Dinner – 7:00pm
  All proceeds to benefit Catholic Schools in the Diocese of Gallup.

  Ash Wednesday, February 22, 2023 is the beginning of lent.
  This is not a Holy Day of Obligation. As the first day of the Lenten season,
  however, it is a very important day in the Church year.
  Our season of repentance characterized by
  prayer, fasting, and almsgiving begins with
  Ash Wednesday liturgy. St. Rose: 8:30 a.m.

  Days of abstinence are Ash Wednesday and all Fridays during lent.
  Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of both abstinence and fasting.
  Abstinence: No Meat ( beef, pork, chicken, lamb etc.)
  You may have milk, egg , cheese and fish Abstinence is obligatory for all those over 14.
  Fasting: This means one full meal. The
  other two meals must not exceed one full meal. No snacking between meals is allowed.
  Fasting is obligatory for those between the ages of 15-59.
  
  These Lenten regulations are minimum. You are encouraged to do other penance during lent. For more infor-
