100 YEARS AND COUNTING

THE HEART OF THE COMMUNITY

 

The parish of St. Rose of Lima is considered to be the “mother” parish of San Juan County. Many of the church families are descendants of the original homesteaders that settled this region over a hundred years ago. We continue to build on the legacy of faith, service and community that have been the hallmarks that represent the township of Blanco. The church truly is the center of the community, bringing generations of families to profess and live out their love for Christ and to integrate discipleship and diversity of culture and traditions.

 
 



 

St. Rose of Lima became a parish in 1900. It was originally a mission of Parkview and was located in a small building at a different site from the present church. It was the first parish in San Juan County and included missions in the outlying areas of Rosa, Carracas, Los Pinos, Los Martinez, Gobernador, Alcatraz, La Fragua, Farmington, La Plata and Lumberton. The original church burned in 1906 and a new larger church was built in 1910 and run by the Franciscans.






 

In 1918, a school was established at the church as a service to the community. The Ursuline Sisters taught at St. Rose of Lima for 33 years. In 1951, the school was closed due to a lawsuit which brought about a distinct separation of church and state preventing the sisters from teaching in their religious habits.

 



 

 

 

On December 7, 1930 a disastrous fire destroyed the church and convent completely. As late as the 1940’s, priests traveled by horse to certain missions of the parish. They felt that they were more likely to reach their destinations on the bad roads by horse rather than by car. Because of the growing populations in some of the mission areas, the pastors at Blanco had the task of building churches at Aztec, Bloomfield and Navajo Dam. In 1963, the old gym of the now closed school was remodeled and fashioned into the present day Parish Hall and a rectory was completed in 1968.











 

 By 1986, a new church was constructed including classrooms and parish hall. This is the structure that is still used today. The present Parish is made up of 185-200 Catholic families. All statistics indicate a continued population growth in the area. Much still remains to be done to meet the needs of the community in the decades ahead.

La parroquia de Santa Rosa de Lima es considerada la parroquia madre del condado de San Juan. Muchas de las familias feligresas son descendientes de los primeros colonos que se asentaron en esta región hace más de cien años. Seguimos construyendo sobre el legado de fe, servicio y comunidad que han caracterizado al municipio de Blanco. La iglesia es verdaderamente el centro de la comunidad, uniendo a generaciones de familias para profesar y vivir su amor por Cristo e integrar el discipulado con la diversidad cultural y las tradiciones.

1900

La parroquia de Santa Rosa de Lima se convirtió en 1900. Originalmente era una misión de Parkview y estaba ubicada en un pequeño edificio en un sitio diferente al de la iglesia actual.


Fue la primera parroquia del condado de San Juan e incluía misiones en las zonas aledañas de Rosa, Carracas, Los Pinos, Los Martínez, Gobernador, Alcatraz, La Fragua, Farmington, La Plata y Lumberton. La iglesia original se incendió en 1906 y en 1910 se construyó una nueva iglesia más grande, administrada por los franciscanos.

1918

En 1918, se fundó una escuela en la iglesia como servicio a la comunidad. Las Hermanas Ursulinas impartieron clases en Santa Rosa de Lima durante 33 años. En 1951, la escuela fue clausurada debido a una demanda que estableció una clara separación entre la Iglesia y el Estado, impidiendo que las hermanas enseñaran con sus hábitos religiosos.


1930

El 7 de diciembre de 1930, un incendio devastador destruyó por completo la iglesia y el convento. Incluso en la década de 1940, los sacerdotes viajaban a caballo a ciertas misiones de la parroquia. Consideraban que era más probable llegar a sus destinos en los malos caminos a caballo que en automóvil.


Debido al creciente número de habitantes en algunas de las zonas misioneras, los pastores de Blanco tuvieron la tarea de construir iglesias en Aztec, Bloomfield y Navajo Dam. En 1963, el antiguo gimnasio de la escuela, ahora cerrada, fue remodelado y convertido en el actual Salón Parroquial, y la casa parroquial se terminó de construir en 1968.

1986

En 1986 se construyó una nueva iglesia que incluía aulas y salón parroquial. Esta es la estructura que aún se utiliza hoy en día. La parroquia actual está compuesta por entre 185 y 200 familias católicas. Todas las estadísticas indican un continuo crecimiento demográfico en la zona. Aún queda mucho por hacer para satisfacer las necesidades de la comunidad en las próximas décadas.
